Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD caught the attention of automobile enthusiasts at the Japan Mobility Show with their electric SUV known as the U8. The U8 SUV was introduced this year in January and boasts capabilities of a battle tank with the power to do a full 360-degree turn right at the same spot. The U8 SUV derives the power to do this full 360-degree turn right solely from its integrated electric motor which has been developed by the Chinese manufacturer BYD.

BYD U8 - Powertrain 

BYD’s U8 SUV is slated to be launched at some point in 2024 and is expected to compete with the likes of Range Rover. The U8 SUV boasts a hybrid powertrain that comprises a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 49.05 kWh LFP Blade battery and four independently torque-vectored electric motors. This powertrain churns out a power output of 1,180 bhp and 1,280 Nm of torque that sends power to all four wheels of the SUV. 

BYD U8 - Performance

The BYD U8 SUV can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and can achieve a top-speed of 200 km/h. On electric power alone, the U8 SUV delivers a range of 180 km on a single charge, while, when relying on traditional fuels, it delivers an impressive 1000 km driving range. The U8 also features a 6kW vehicle-to-load capability which allows it to power external devices as well.

Talking about the kerb weight and dimensions of the BYD U8 electric SUV, it weighs 3,460 kgs and measures 5,319 mm in length, 2,050 mm in width, and 1,930 mm in height. The U8 is a five-seater SUV with a wheelbase of 3,050 mm. BYD claims that this SUV can even float as it features a capability of wading through waters up to 1,000 mm deep.
