Driving License: The Indian government is planning on introducing a point-based driving license system in the country soon. The initiative aims to enhance road safety while reducing traffic violations. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways in India, recently announced the initiative at the National Conclave for Road Safety. Let’s take a look at the point system-based driving license system and how it works.
India’s Alarming Road Safety
The union minister highlighted that India’s road safety conditions are alarming and need measures. He also shared that nearly 5 lakh accidents occur in India annually, resulting in around 1.8 lakh fatalities annually. The majority of victims are young people aged between 18 and 45 years of age.

Point-Based Driving License: How It Works?
Under the new initiative, the government will prescribe a limit for the points. Drivers will lose points for every traffic offence they commit. Once a driver crosses the prescribed limit, their license will be temporarily suspended for 6 months. However, drivers who continue to break the rules will face a more severe penalty, and their license can be permanently revoked. The system is anticipated to act as a damper against hasty driving practices, such as drunk driving, overspeeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, and using a mobile phone while driving.

Other Notable Measures
The Indian government has taken several notable measures in the past to improve road safety in the country. The Indian government has made it mandatory for two-wheelers manufactured from 2026 onwards to have ABS. The government has also identified 100 districts across the country that record the highest rates of road accidents and black spots. These areas will be targeted and eventually transformed into ‘Zero Fatality Zones.’ Additionally, the government is also anticipated to introduce mandatory driving tests for license renewal, which will further improve the road safety conditions.
