How To Transfer Vehicle Ownership After Purchasing Pre-Owned Car; Step-By-Step Guide

Transferring ownership of a vehicle, whether it's a car or a bike, is necessary when you buy it from someone else. This process is governed by local motor vehicle laws, and can sometimes seem difficult. Therefore, here we are simplifying the steps for transferring vehicle ownership conveniently.

Firstly, after buying a used vehicle, you have 30 days to transfer its ownership. The required documents for this process include a copy of valid insurance, the original Registration Certificate (RC), proof of address like a voter ID, a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, filled Form no. 29, a crime report from N.C.R.B. and filled Form no. 30. After collecting these documents, you have to follow these steps. 

Obtain No Objection Certificate (NOC)

This is necessary only if the vehicle is registered in an RTO outside your local area. To get the NOC, fill Form 28 and submit it to the original RTO of the vehicle. If the vehicle was registered outside Delhi, also submit Form 29 to that RTO.

Visit The Local RTO With The Required Documents 

These include the original RC, copy of G.I.R., Form 29, Form 30, Form 35 (if the vehicle is hypothecated), Form 60 or Form 61 (for cars only), NOC, proof of address, PUC certificate, owner's valid driving licence, new owner's passport size photos and PAN card. Additional documents may be needed for company-to-individual transfers.

Submit All Documents 

Submit all documents, along with the prescribed fees for RC transfer. The process usually takes around 30 days, and you can check the transfer status online.

Vehicle Re-Registration 

If the vehicle was originally registered outside your state, you'll need to re-register it with your local RTO. Submit documents like original RC, Form 20, Form 27, Form 33, Form 60 or Form 61, NOC, proof of address, PUC certificate, owner's valid driving licence, new owner's passport size photos and PAN card.

Pay Road Tax

Pay road tax if the vehicle was registered outside Delhi. The amount is based on the vehicle's original invoice price. You can also apply for a refund of the original road tax paid by the previous owner, based on the car's price and age. Submit necessary documents for the tax refund.
