Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country's first in plant railway siding project for auto manufacturing giant Maruti Suzuki at their factory in Hansalpur, Gujarat. The ceremony was held on Tuesday on both the occasion of the inauguration of railway projects worth Rs. 85,000 crore and the launch of 10 Vande Bharat trains.

The initiative, which was under the PM Gati Shakti mission of the Indian government in collaboration with the state government and Indian Railways, has come to be recognised as a revolutionary and pivotal moment in the steel industry as well as the automotive supply chain as a whole.

The project, which had a budget of Rs 976 crores in total, was completed by the special purpose vehicle Bahucharaji Rail Corporation Limited (BRCL), whose shareholders included Maruti Suzuki (26% equity), Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (29% equity), and Gujarat Railway Infrastructure Development Corporation (49% equity).

Maruti Suzuki spent Rs 105 crores to construct railway siding, a highly promising logistical improvement that is anticipated to drastically lower carbon emissions. This will lead to the annual elimination of 50,000 truck trips, a reduction in fuel consumption of 35 million litres, and an annual reduction in carbon emissions of 1,650 tonnes.

Dedicating the project to green logistics, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “We are honoured to be part of the Prime Minister’s ambitious Gati Shakti programme that fosters efficiencies in logistics. Today marks a significant milestone as we become India’s first automobile company to have a railway siding facility within its manufacturing plant.”

Takeuchi added, “As we gear to double our production capacity from present 2 million units per annum to 4 million units per annum by 2030-31, the dispatches of vehicles from railways too will increase multifold. This in-plant railway facility reinforces our commitment towards sustainable mobility.”

Maruti Suzuki has sent about 18 lakh vehicles via railroads as of February. According to him, the railways have dispatched 4.09 lakh cars so far in the current fiscal year through February.
