Winter Car Care Tips: The Winter season is here, and while it brings freezing wind and shorter days, it also brings its own set of challenges for vehicle owners. The low temperatures can hamper the performance of your vehicle, and hence it becomes very important to maintain the battery, tyres, and engine of your car in optimal condition. We have shared a list of 5 tips to make sure that you can maintain the optimal condition of your car in freezing weather.
Tip Number 1: How To Maintain Battery
The efficiency of the battery reduces significantly during cold weather. The chemical reactions inside the battery slow down due to low temperature, which may result in reduced efficiency. Kindly test your battery and keep its terminals clean and tight. If you own an EV, you should expect a 10-20 per cent reduction in range in cold weather. Vehicle owners should also avoid using several electrical functions, such as music, heated seats, and extra lights.

Tip Number 2: Right Tyres, Optimal Conditions
It is important to take care of the tyres of your vehicle. If you are living in a place where it snows, you should buy dedicated winter tyres. Check the tread patterns of the tyres, and if any tyre has a tread depth of less than 2mm, you should replace the tyres. Regularly check the pressure of the tyres of your car. Low temperature results in reduced air pressure in the tyres, and you should maintain the tyre pressure as per the recommendation of the manufacturer. If you are driving in a place where it snows, you are also recommended to use snow chains for enhanced grip.
Tip Number 3: Fluids
It is very important to understand that low temperatures react differently with different types of fluids present in the car. Low temperature thickens engine oil, which makes the cold start hard for the car. Kindly check your engine oil, and if it looks dark, have it changed. Vehicle owners should mix coolant and antifreeze in equal parts to protect the engine from overheating and corrosion. Also, check the brake fluid and transmission oil, and change them if necessary. If you use a diesel car, you should add an anti-gel or anti-wax additive to the fuel tank. Whereas the fuel tank of a petrol vehicle should always be kept halfway full to reduce the chance of condensation.

Tip Number 4: Wipers
Low temperatures can stiffen the rubber of the wipers, and it may result in streaks across the windshield. Also, check your wipers, and if their rubber is cracked, get them repaired and replaced. If you live in a place where it snows, you should lift your wipers off when you park your vehicle. This will reduce the chances of your wiper freezing to the glass. Also, check whether the washer fluid nozzles are working properly and are not clogged.

Tip Number 5: Heating & Defrost
Check the defroster and heater of the car before getting it on the road. Check whether the airflow of the heater is working properly. Modern cars come with a dedicated defrost mode, which uses the AC to remove moisture from windows and windshields. Make sure that the AC filter of your car is clean, as a clogged and dirty air flow will reduce the air flow to the cabin.
