Bihar Assembly Elections 2025: The BJP, JDU-led NDA government is heading towards a decisive victory and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar appears to secure a fifth consecutive term. Kumar is the state's longest-serving chief minister. 

As per the latest trends, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has maintained a lead in 95  Assembly constituencies, and the Janata Dal United (JDU) is also leading on 82 seats. The state’s main opposition, the Mahagathbandhan, appears to have suffered a clean sweep, maintaining a lead on less than 40 constituencies, with the alliance’s largest party, RJD’s tally going below the 30-seat mark. 

The overall tally of the incumbent alliance has significantly improved. Nitish Kumar's JDU has managed to maintain a lead on more than 80 seats, almost double what it got in the 2020 Assembly election.

Bihar Assembly Elections: 2020 vs 2025

  • Mandate Strength: The 2020 election was a very tight contest with a narrow 15-seat margin for the NDA over the MGB. The 2025 election, however, appears to be a landslide victory for the NDA, which crossed the 200-seat mark, indicating a clear and strong mandate.

  • Leading Party Shift: In 2020, the RJD was the single largest party with 75 seats. However, in 2025, the BJP is leading the seat count within the alliance, with 94 seats, surpassing the RJD and JD(U).

  • JD(U) Comeback: The defining moment for this year’s assembly election has been the performance of Nitish Kumar’s JD(U), which nearly doubled its seat tally from 2020. The JD (U) had secured 43 seats in 2020 and had become the third-largest party, but in this year’s election, JD(U) managed to take a comfortable lead in 82 seats.

  • LJP (RV) Performance: Chirag Paswan's LJP (Ram Vilas) showed a dramatic improvement, moving from a single seat to leading in over 20 constituencies.
