The Bihar Assembly election results have dealt a major blow to the Left parties, which had won 16 seats in the 2020 polls. Despite contesting more seats this time, the Left bloc has been pushed into introspection after failing to replicate its previous performance.
In the 2020 elections, the Left, contesting as part of the Mahagathbandhan, had fielded candidates in 25 seats. The CPI(ML) contested 19 seats and won 12, while the CPI(M) and CPI secured two seats each. This time, the CPI(ML) contested 20 seats, the CPI nine, and the CPI(M) four. However, the results have been disappointing.

In the 2025 elections, only three Left candidates managed to secure victories:
-CPI(ML): Sandeep Saurav (Paliganj), Arun Singh (Karakat)
-CPI(M): Ajay Kumar (Vibhutipur)
The CPI failed to win any seats.
The Left had pinned high hopes on star campaigners. CPI General Secretary D. Raja, CPI(M) chief MA Baby, and CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, who addressed over 100 public meetings, led extensive campaigns. Yet the parties suffered major setbacks, indicating a sharp dip in ground support.
A minor consolation for the Left is that the Mahagathbandhan’s major constituents, the RJD and Congress, have delivered their worst performances in recent years, reflecting a comprehensive collapse of the alliance’s electoral strategy.
Seats Lost by Left Parties
-CPI: Teghra, Bakhri (SC), Bachhwara, Rajapakar (SC), Bihar Sharif, Banka, Harlakhi, Jhanjharpur, Kargahar
-CPI(M): Manjhi, Pipra, Hayaghat

Analysts say the Left must reassess its organisational strategy or risk an even steeper decline in upcoming elections.
