Domestic electricity consumers in Bihar who use more than 125 units per month can now reduce their bills to zero by installing solar panels under the government's Har-GharMuft Solar Panel Yojana (Free Solar Panel for Every Home Scheme).
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently announced that after installing solar panels, any electricity consumption above the 125-unit threshold can be offset, effectively making the entire bill free. This complements his government's existing policy of providing 125 units of free electricity to domestic consumers, a scheme already benefiting 16.7 million families in the state. The new solar initiative is aimed at households that still incur costs after using their free units.
Following the Chief Minister's directive, the CMD of the Energy Department has instructed all Superintending Electrical Engineers to implement the scheme. Superintending Electrical Engineer Pankaj Rajesh held a meeting with Executive Engineers from all divisions to kickstart the process.
To ensure swift implementation, Junior Electrical Engineers in every section have been tasked with installing solar panels in five homes each per month, starting with urban areas. These engineers will first conduct surveys to identify eligible households and then encourage them to adopt solar energy. They will also assist consumers who are unaware of the application process by providing information about the official website and helping them apply for the solar panel installation.
