Bihar News: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power with a historic victory in Bihar. Nitish Kumar-led alliance in the state entered the last round to chalk out a power-sharing formula before forming the government. Now, the new government will face the challenge of fulfilling the promises made to the public during the elections. A roadmap will need to be created to implement these promises. Drafts are being prepared at the administrative level for this.
Political analysts also believe that the new government will have to do many things to accelerate Bihar's economic and social development. In particular, migration, education, employment, law and order, and women's empowerment have been major issues.
During the elections, the NDA had said about its manifesto that it was not just a manifesto, but a new story of Bihar. A story where there is employment, education, industry, security, and a clear roadmap for development. In light of this, top officials at the top of the administration say that the new government will address the major challenges facing Bihar.
Employment And Migration
Employment and migration are two major issues in the state. Now, fulfilling the promise of 10 million jobs will be a priority for the new government. According to a report, two out of every three households in Bihar have at least one member working in another state. This is evidence of how Bihar's labour force is migrating from the state. The NDA promised that it would build boost industries in the state and factories would be set up in every district.
What Data Says About Labour Force
According to the Labour Resources Department, 54 per cent of Bihar's labour force is still engaged in agriculture, compared to 46 per cent nationally. Only five per cent of the labour force is employed in the manufacturing sector, compared to the national average of 11 per cent.
Education Must Be In Focus
In search of better education and opportunities, talented youth are forced to leave Bihar. This also drains money from the state. Those who return to Bihar after completing their studies lack better earning opportunities. Former Vice Chancellor Dr Rasbihari Singh says that Bihar has made significant progress in reducing the gap in education, health, and infrastructure, but in terms of per capita income, it remains India's poorest state. India's per capita income has surpassed Rs 1.89 lakh, but Bihar's is less than a third of the national average, at approximately Rs 60,000. Consequently, the new government must work to ensure quality education for youth and increase income.
Challenge Of Reducing School Dropouts
While considerable work has been done on building and infrastructure in schools and recruiting teachers, the lack of quality education and the dropout rate remain concerning. A large proportion of students do not progress beyond middle school. This poses a challenge for the new government. Hopes remain high. Through education, skill development, and employment generation, Bihar can take another big leap towards transforming education.
Increased Focus On Law And Order
Nitish is credited with ending the 'jungle raj' in Bihar, but law and order was also issue in the elections. This is true to some extent. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the crime rate in Bihar has increased significantly between 2015 and 2024.
Panchamrit Guarantee For Poor And Lakhpati Didi
The NDA has made five major welfare promises for the poor under its Panchamrit Guarantee. Free ration, 125 units of free electricity per family, free healthcare up to Rs 5 lakh, construction of 5 million pucca houses, and social security pensions for eligible families.
The government prioritises half of the population, which played a significant role in the landslide victory of the NDA, must remain in focus. Women's empowerment was a key highlight of the NDA's manifesto. The new government's goal will be to make 10 million women Lakhpati Didi (women earning more than Rs 1 lakh annually).
