Several students fell unconscious in different schools of Bihar on Wednesday due to severe heatwave condition in the state. Videos of the incidents showed students falling on the ground during their school hours amid intense heat, which has gripped the entire north India. Parents and guardians of the students earlier urged authorities to announce the summer vacation, which was an appeal that authorities avoided.
Students were later rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention after many of them suffered from heatstroke. Begusarai District Magistrate Roshan Kushwaha said that the condition of the students is alright and there is nothing to worry about. He stated that education officers have been instructed to monitor incidents due to increasing temperatures.
The incident also sparked a political row, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged that bureaucracy is running the government in Bihar and CM Nitish Kumar has no say in the governance of the state. Tejashwi Yadav also highlighted the lack of infrastructure in Bihar schools and asked the state government to announce holidays.
"There is no government and democracy in Bihar but only the bureaucracy. The CM is so weak that no one listens to him even regarding the timings of school. The temperature is at 47 degrees Celsius, the loo is blowing and at least the little children should have some relaxation. The infrastructure of schools in Bihar is not good... But, there is nothing in the CM's hands," Tejashwi Yadav said while addressing the media on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, IMD scientist Dr Naresh Kumar on Wednesday said that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in several states across India. He stated that IMD has issued a red alert in western Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh while adding that temperatures will likely fall from May 30 onwards.
