At least two people died and 28 were injured after a bus carrying devotees going for a holy bath to Patna crashed into the divider near Taregna Math on the Patna-Gaya-Dobhi NH-22 and overturned. The incident took place on Thursday evening.
Two individuals, in critical condition, were given first aid and then sent to PMCH in Patna and NMCCH in Gaya. The others, who were lightly injured, were treated at the sub-divisional hospital.
The deceased devotees have been identified as Hridya Kumar (23), son of the late Laldhari Yadav from Wajidpur, Belaganj, and Tulsi Yadav (53), son of the late Rambhajan Yadav. Kamlesh Kumar from Wajidpur, who was severely injured, was sent to PMCH, and Niranjan Kumar, son of Janardan Prasad, was sent to NMCCH in Gaya.
SDO Amit Kumar stated that there were 32 passengers on the bus involved in the accident. Efforts are underway to locate the absconding driver. The police have seized the bus. It was reported that the devotees had reserved two buses from Wajidpur and departed for Patna at 4 PM.
Passengers Allege Driver Was Drunk
Madhesh Kumar from Chakand, Gaya, explained that his group was traveling in two buses. The driver of the bus he was on was driving at high speed right from the start. The bus overtook the other one and reached near Viranchi, where the driver stopped the bus and went to drink alcohol.
Meanwhile, the second bus came from behind and overtook them. When the driver returned after drinking and learned that the other bus had passed, he accelerated. As a result, he lost control and crashed into the divider. After the accident, the driver fled the scene.
Notably, Bihar is a dry state and sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited there.
