Bihar Pension Hike: In a major step ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly poll, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced that the pension amount for elderly, specially-abled, and widowed women has been increased from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100. In a post on X, Kumar stated that the beneficiaries will get the amount from July, adding that the amount will be transferred to the bank accounts on July 10. He further stated that the step will significantly benefit more than 1 crore residents of the state.

"I am happy to inform that under the Social Security Pension Scheme, all the elderly, specially-abled people and widowed women will now get pension of Rs 1,100 instead of Rs 400 every month. All the beneficiaries will get pension at the increased rate from the month of July," Nitish Kumar stated in a post on X.

 "It will be ensured that this amount is sent to the account of all the beneficiaries on the 10th of the month. This will help 1 crore 9 lakh 69 thousand 255 beneficiaries. The senior citizens are a precious part of the society and ensuring their respectable living is our top priority. The state government will continue to strive in this direction," he added.

Apart from this, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary defined the move as "historic", adding that the decision will benefit the residents. "Today is a historic day as the CM has increased the pensions for widows, the elderly, and the specially abled. I thank the CM for this," Chaudhary was quoted as saying by ANI. The state government had started the scheme in 2019 and there has been a demand to increase the amount since several months.

The state assembly election in Bihar is likely to be held in the later months of the year. While the ruling NDA will try to repeat the government, the opposition INDIA Bloc will try to make a comeback after a decade. Apart from this, Prashant Kishor-led Jan Suraj has made the political battle triangular.
