Police officers in Bihar, ranging from constables to the Director General of Police (DG), will now be covered under an accident insurance scheme with benefits up to Rs 2.3 crore. This new initiative includes a uniform compensation of Rs 1.5 crore for the dependents of martyred officers across all ranks, with additional amounts determined based on specific eligibility criteria.
For the first time, the scheme introduced a provision of Rs 20 lakh in the event of a non-accidental death of a serving policeman, including cases of suicide. Previously, no compensation was provided for natural deaths. This amount will be disbursed under the Bihar Police Salary Package, which was formalised through an agreement between Bihar Police and Bank of Baroda on Friday.
The agreement was signed at the Bihar Police Headquarters in Patna, in the presence of AIG Welfare Vishal Sharma, SP Personnel Upendra Prasad and Bank of Baroda officials, including General Manager Chandramani Tripathi.
The Bihar Police Association President, Mrityunjay Kumar Singh, lauded this move as a historic step. AIG Vishal Sharma highlighted that over one lakh policemen and officers will benefit from the Bihar Police Salary Package Scheme, which offers a range of free insurance facilities. Participation in this package is voluntary.

Previously, personal accident insurance ranged from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh, which was increased to Rs 50 lakh in July this year. Under the new package, the cover has been further increased to Rs 1.5 crore. Additional benefits under the scheme are expected to provide a total coverage of around Rs 2.3 crore. Policemen involved in terrorism or anti-Naxal operations will receive Rs 1.5 crore.
The package also includes up to Rs 10 lakh for plastic surgery, air ambulance, medicine costs, and deaths following coma (after 48 hours). Additional perks include a 50 per cent discount on locker charges, free debit and credit cards, zero balance accounts, employee personal loans and discounted demat account charges. Retired officers will have insurance coverage of Rs 75 lakh, which also applies in cases of disability.
Family members of the policemen will also benefit, with zero balance accounts, free debit and credit cards and Rs 7.5 lakh for children’s higher education or daughters' marriages in case of accidental death. The entire package will be reviewed after three months to ensure the benefits are effectively reaching the personnel.
