Bihar SIR News: As many as 3 lakh people have reportedly received notice from the Election Commission of India over doubts on their citizenship. The notices have been sent as part of the ongoing special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Bihar voter list. The voters have been summoned by the Election Commission after discrepancies were found in the documents submitted by them.
The Commission has asked the voters to appear before the concerned official within 7 days to explain ‘discrepancies in their documents’.
“These three lakh people had enrolled themselves in the draft voter list as per SIR. However, scrutiny of documents showed discrepancies. Subsequently, field visits were carried out which further led to suspicion that these people might be from Bangladesh, Myanmar or Nepal," an official was quoted as saying by a media publication.
The majority of the voters who have been sent notice and called for explanation by the ECI hail from districts of East Champaran, West Champaran, Madhubani, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, and Supaul.
According to the sources, these individuals are reported from Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Afghanistan, news agency ANI reported
Political Slugfest Over ECI Notice To Bihar Voters
Notices to huge numbers of voters, demanding an explanation over their citizenship, have sparked a political slugfest. The BJP has accused the region of being a hub for illegal immigration by Bangladeshis and Rohingyas. In contrast, parties like Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM argue that the people in this area are poor, uneducated, and living in flood-prone zones, making them highly susceptible to losing documents.
Bihar SIR: Political Parties Submit Claims And Objections
According to the daily bulletin by the Election Commission of India, political parties submitted a total of 53 claims on Wednesday during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2025 of the electoral rolls. All the applications were submitted by the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation in Bihar.
Of the total claims and objections received by the commission, 1,78,948 claims and objections were directly from electors. Of these, the disposal of 20,702 claims and objects by EC comes after seven days.

A total of 1,60,813 BLAs appointed by Political parties can collect Claims (Form 6) from the public and Objections (Form 7) from the public and file objections themselves/along with the prescribed declaration. Generic complaints, without prescribed Forms or declaration, are not counted as Claims (Form 6) and Objections (Form 7), the ECI said in a release.
The process of filing claims and objections will close in two days, on September 1.
