Bihar Election: In a bizarre incident in Bihar, a woman in Madhepura district reportedly received a voter ID with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's photo in the image column. The incident happened after the woman had approached the authorities to correct the address; however, she found out that her photo was replaced by Nitish Kumar after receiving the card. Abhilasha Kumari stated that while the other details in the voter card were correct, the image column had the chief minister's photo. The matter came to light amid an ongoing controversy where the Election Commission is revising the voter's list in the state ahead of the much-hyped assembly polls.
Abhilasha's husband, Chandan Kumar, stated that the local officers have committed a big mistake, adding that the couple was asked not to tell anyone about the lapse, reported NDTV. "Everything was fine on the card, but the photo was of Nitish Kumar ji. This reflects the negligence on the government's part," Kumar was quoted as saying by NDTV. "It's a serious lapse. Such a mistake reflects the negligence of the agency or employee preparing the voter ID," he added.
Trinamool Congress, while reacting to the incident, stated that the photo was changed due to the administrative failure. In a post on X, the party further claimed that lapses have been reported in different parts of the state. "A shocking and shameful incident has surfaced from Bihar, where a woman's voter ID card in Madhepura district features the face of CM Nitish Kumar instead of her photograph," TMC stated in its post on X. "Reports of similar bizarre, erroneous voter IDs are pouring in from across states," the post added.
The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to pause the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar; however, it raised a question on the timing and list of the documents. The apex court stated that the Election Commission's revision of the voter list aligns with constitutional rights and cannot be considered undemocratic.
