The picture regarding the election of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) National President has become clear. According to party sources, the election for the new party chief will be held on January 19 and 20. The nomination process is scheduled to be completed on January 19, while the formal announcement of the new President’s name will be made on January 20 following the voting process. Preparations for filling this crucial organisational post, which has been vacant for some time, have reached their final stages.

Top Leadership To Propose Candidate

Sources indicate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, along with approximately 10 other senior party and organisational leaders, will act as proposers in this election. This election is considered critical for the BJP's future political and electoral roadmap.

Nitin Nabin Leading The Race

Meanwhile, Nitin Nabin is reported to be the frontrunner for the post. Citing party sources, news agency ANI has stated that his candidacy is currently considered the strongest. If elected, he would become the youngest National President in the party's history. His term would last until January 2029, though there is a possibility of an extension due to the proposed Lok Sabha elections that year.

Notably, Nitin Nabin was appointed as the BJP's Working National President on December 15, 2025, though he assumed charge later due to the inauspicious 'Kharmas' period.

A Look At Nitin Nabin’s Profile

The 45-year-old leader is currently the Road Construction Minister in the Bihar government. He has been elected as an MLA from the Bankipur assembly seat for five consecutive terms (2006, 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025). His father, Navin Kishore Sinha, was also a renowned senior leader of the BJP.

The Electoral Process And Rules

According to sources, the BJP's organisational elections are nearly complete nationwide, with internal polls finalised in 29 out of 37 states. State Presidents from these regions will submit a set of nomination papers in support of Nitin Nabin. Additionally, members of the BJP National Council will separately file nominations in his favor.

As Per the BJP constitution:

- The National President is elected by an Electoral College comprising members of the National and State Councils.

- A candidate must have been a primary member of the party for at least 15 years.

- A minimum of 20 members of the Electoral College must propose the candidate.

- An eligible member can hold the post for two consecutive terms, totaling a maximum of six years.

In a recent meeting at the BJP headquarters, Election Committee Convener K Laxman, along with Co-conveners Sambit Patra and Naresh Bansal, discussed the election process and timeline in detail. An official announcement is expected soon.
