Congress on late Thursday night released the first list of 48 candidates for the upcoming Bihar Assembly Elections even as the seat-sharing agreement is still pending in the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan alliance.

In the first list, the grand old party has fielded its state unit chief Raja Ram from Kutumba. The shocking announcement comes from Bachhwara with the candidature of Prakash Garib Das as the seat was likely to go with ally CPI, who lost the seat by just 484 seats in 2020 elections. Prakash ended third on Congress ticket in 2020.

Among other key seats is Vaishali, where the party has pitted Er Sanjeev Singh. The seat is also eyed by RJD. Apart from that Shakeel Ahmad Khan has been given ticket from Phulparas, Shyam Bihar Prasad from Raxaul, Warsi Ahmad from Bettiah, Shasi Bhushan Rai from GovindganjBijendra Chaudhary from Muzaffarpur, Amita Bhushan from Begusarai, Shashant Shekhar from Patna Sahib, Kaushalendra Kumar from Nalanda, Omair Khan from Bihar Sharif, and Ajeet Kumar Sharma from Bhagalpur.

Rajesh Ram thanked the party for the nomination. Taking to X, he said, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of the Congress Party and assure them that I will not contest this election alone, but the entire Kutumba family will fight together,” the Congress Bihar unit president said. “We will all together make our invaluable contribution to forming the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar,” he added.

In 2020, the grand old party contested 70 seats but won only 19 of them. In run to upcoming elections, Congress started its campaign against special intensive revision (SIR) which was held in Bihar after 23 years. The grand old party led the charge against the government and the Election Commission with the 'vote chori' allegations.

Lok Sabha LoP and senior Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi, who was at the helm of the campaign against the poll body, held a Voter Adhikar Yatra across Bihar. 

Filled with confidence with the success of the yatra, Gandhi and Congress believe that they have gained the momentum and hence they must contest at least 60 seats.
