Anant Singh Profile: Don-turned-politician Anant Kumar Singh once again bagged the seat of Mokama, winning for the fourth time from the assembly constituency. The seat gained media spotlight following the murder of Jan Suraaj sympathiser Dularchand Yadav. Singh was arrested by the police for the murder.

However, like last time, this time also, Singh’s police detention did not prove to be a roadblock for his path to victory. The JDU candidate won from Mokama by a margin of over 25,000 votes against RJD’s Veena Devi, wife of his rival Surajbhan Singh. Jan Suraaj Party’s Piyush Priyadarshi came in the third position, securing close to 20,000 votes.

Anant Kumar Singh Background: Net Worth, Educational Qualification, Political Career

Son of Chandradeep Singh, Anant Kumar Singh made his way up the political ladder of Bihar from the grassroots level. An agriculturist and social worker by description, Singh first came into the political limelight during the 2005 Assembly Elections. Interestingly, that year Bihar went to the polls twice, and Singh emerged victorious on both occasions from the Mokama constituency. A trusted lieutenant of Nitish Kumar back then, the JD(U) MLA consolidated his hold over the region, repeating his success in the 2010 Assembly Election.

However, things took a turn when Singh reportedly had a fallout with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar over his image as a ‘bahubali’ (strongman) and his growing independent clout in Mokama. Nitish, keen to project a cleaner political image, distanced himself from Singh, prompting the latter to contest as an independent candidate in 2015, where he once again defeated the JD(U) nominee by a wide margin.

After the election, Singh briefly rejoined the JD(U) in an attempt to reconcile with Nitish Kumar, but the rapprochement did not last long. Disillusioned by internal politics and sensing a shifting tide in Bihar, he defected to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) ahead of the 2020 Assembly Elections. Contesting on an RJD ticket, Singh won yet again, reaffirming his unmatched hold over Mokama’s political landscape. However, two years later, Singh was convicted in a case related to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, and grenades from his ancestral home, leading to his disqualification from the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2022.

But, like every coin has a flip side, Singh too, has a darker, more nefarious side. The Dularchand Yadav murder case is not the first criminal charge to haunt his career. Over the years, there have been at least 28 criminal cases lodged against Anant Singh, ranging from murder, kidnapping, and extortion to attempted murder and arms possession. While Singh and his supporters dismiss many of these as politically motivated, the long trail of cases reflects the violent undercurrents that have shaped both his rise and his rule in Mokama.

Coming to his net worth, Singh has around Rs 100 crore at his disposal and Rs 25 crore as his liabilities. The educational details of Singh remain out of public bounds even though he has been categorised under the ‘literate’ category.

Mokama Assembly Constituency Seat: Past Trends

A stronghold of JD(U) from 2005, Mokama has been the heart of the fiefdom of don-turned-politicians. At the core of the political machinery is the dominant Bhumihars of the seat which has often taken the electoral battles spilt onto the streets and gunfire was once a common feature of campaigns.
