Patna Power Cut: Patna witnessed widespread chaos on Thursday following a massive power outage that left nearly 10 lakh residents without electricity for over 19 hours. The power cut began at 10:30 PM on Wednesday and was only restored on Thursday evening, causing severe disruption to daily life across several areas of the city.
The blackout was triggered by a sudden explosion in the New GIS Mithapur Grid, which led to the failure of the grid duct. This incident knocked out the Mithapur grid, which in turn impacted the Karbighia grid. As a result, power supply to 17 substations was completely disrupted, plunging large parts of the city into darkness.
The affected localities included Kankarbagh, Karbighia, Mithapur, Beur, Bypass, Jaganpura, Khemnichak, Jogipur, Zero Mile, Punpun, Pipra, RK Nagar, IOCL, Harischandra Nagar, Etwarpur, and Kailash Nagar. Residents struggled to cope in the sweltering heat without electricity or water. In many homes, inverters failed, stoves couldn't function properly, and water tanks ran dry.
The crisis extended to public services as well. The Municipal Corporation’s water supply systems were brought to a standstill due to the power cut. Many people stayed awake through the night, unable to sleep in the oppressive heat, and several office-goers had to skip work—or leave without bathing or eating—due to the lack of basic utilities.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the resilience of Patna’s power infrastructure and the need for urgent upgrades to prevent future crises of this scale.
