A brother and sister, found unconscious near the stairs of platform one at Patna Junction on Sunday evening, passed away on Monday while undergoing treatment at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). Preliminary investigations suggest both had consumed poison, though it remains unconfirmed whether it was an act of suicide or foul play.
Their post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday.
Victim Identification And Family Background
The deceased have been identified as 32-year-old Dinesh Rai and 28-year-old Goldy Rai, originally residents of Bankata village in Gopalpur, Gopalganj.
On Monday afternoon, their father, Avadhesh Rai, arrived at the mortuary accompanied by four acquaintances from his village. His testimony revealed a tragic history of estrangement:
No Contact for 20 Years: The father stated that his children had not been in contact with him for the past two decades, nor did the siblings speak to him.
Living Situation: Years ago, the siblings lived with their maternal aunt in Chainpur, Gopalganj. Avadhesh Rai admitted he had no knowledge of where they were currently living in Patna, who they were with, or what they did for a living.
Father’s Profile: Avadhesh Rai is a farmer with approximately ten bighas of land and owns two cattle. His wife had passed away previously. He does not own a mobile phone and was informed of the incident by a fellow villager.
Sequence Of Events: CCTV Footage Analysis
Railway police have pieced together the events leading up to the tragedy using CCTV footage from the station.
Arrival: The siblings were seen coming from the direction of a toilet and an alley near the eastern side of platform one that leads out of the station.
Movements: Dinesh was walking in front carrying a bag and talking on a mobile phone. Goldy walked behind him, holding a water bottle.
The Collapse: The footage, lasting about four minutes, shows them sitting on the roadside near the toilet. Goldy drank water, followed by Dinesh. While Dinesh continued talking on the phone facing away, Goldy slowly slumped into his lap. Shortly after, Dinesh also collapsed onto the road.
Unclear Consumption: It remains unclear what they had eaten prior to drinking the water.
Public Apathy And Delayed Help
Witness accounts and footage reveal a disturbing lack of immediate assistance from bystanders.
Onlookers: As the siblings writhed in pain on the roadside, passersby stopped to look but did not intervene to take them to a hospital. Some sprinkled water on them, but left when they fell unconscious.
Relocation: Footage shows that after some time, a group of people moved the unconscious siblings to the stairs of platform one and left them there.
Police Alert: It was only after this that a shopkeeper informed the railway police. The RPF and GRP arrived, and the victims were rushed to the ICU at PMCH. Authorities noted that timely medical intervention might have saved their lives.
Investigation Status
Father's Statement: Avadhesh Rai’s formal statement was recorded at the PMCH Traffic Out Post (TOP). However, as of late Monday evening, the statement had not yet been forwarded to the RPF, GRP, or the local police station.
Cause of Death: While poison is suspected, the investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the ingestion.
