Raghunathpur Election 2025: In a closely watched contest, Osama Shahab, son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin, has emerged victorious from the Raghunathpur assembly seat in Bihar’s Siwan district. According to official figures, the Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate received 88,278 votes, defeating his opponent Vikas Kumar Singh of the Janata Dal (United) who secured 79,030 votes, a margin of 9,248 votes.

Raghunathpur, one of six assembly segments under the Siwan Lok Sabha constituency, recorded a turnout of 61.45 per cent in 2025, up from 53.55 per cent in 2020 and 54.78 per cent in 2015.

Shahabuddin had held sway in this area for decades, winning the constituency in 1990 and 1995 and being elected to the Lok Sabha four times from Siwan. He died in 2021 while serving a life sentence at Tihar Jail.

This year’s contest featured seven candidates, with the major line-up including Shahab (RJD), Vikas Kumar Singh (JD(U)) and Jan Suraaj Party entrant Rahul Kirti. Despite the high-profile nature of the fight, it was Shahab who held the edge.

The campaign had drawn criticism from NDA leaders who accused RJD of re-introducing “jungle raj” by fielding Shahab. Still, voters opted for the legacy link, handing RJD the win.

Shahab’s win comes at a time when the RJD is struggling statewide. The NDA secured an overwhelming mandate, winning 202 out of 243 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan managed only 35 seats. The BJP won 89 seats, JD(U) secured 85 and the LJP(RV) took 19. The RJD, despite pockets of strong support such as Raghunathpur, was reduced to 25 seats across Bihar.
