Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party is failing to win a single seat in the Bihar Assembly Election 2025. According to official data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), trends for all 243 seats are available.
The NDA is leading in 201 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) appears to be limited to 36 seats.
Jan Suraaj, which fielded candidates in 239 seats, has been unable to open its account. After leading in 4 seats in the initial trends, the party progressively fell behind. The party's vote share also does not seem to be increasing beyond 3-4 per cent.
Jan Suraaj spokesperson Pawan Kumar Verma said, "We will conduct a thorough review of this electoral failure, as we were unable to win the public's trust."
Seven Main Reasons For Jan Suraaj's Failure
An analysis points to the following seven main reasons for the party's poor performance:
1. Lack of Rural Outreach and Awareness: With 90 per cent of Bihar's population being rural, the party's campaign was largely limited to urban and digital platforms. At rural booths, both the party symbol and the candidate were unfamiliar to voters, leading to a scattered vote bank.
2. Failure to Connect with Women: The party could not sway women voters from the NDA, who were kept loyal by government schemes. The NDA successfully secured the full support of women. Jan Suraaj's core issues (employment, migration) failed to appeal to this demographic, and its proposal to end alcohol prohibition was also unpopular with women.
3. Prashant Kishor Not Contesting the Election: By not entering the electoral fray himself, Prashant Kishor reportedly lost credibility. This decision disappointed supporters and voters.
4. Organisational Weakness and Zero Booth-Level Control: There was a last-minute rush to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and party representatives were absent at many booths. The distribution of tickets to "parachute" candidates caused local resentment, which resulted in half a dozen candidates withdrawing their nominations or stepping down.

5. Image as the BJP's 'B-team': The opposition successfully created suspicion by labelling Jan Suraaj a "spoiler party" intended to split the NDA's vote. This narrative had a negative impact, particularly on social media.
6. Being Seen as an Untested Party Voters, considering a vote for the party a "waste," are reportedly waiting until the next election. The party failed to establish its credibility with the electorate.
7. Over-reliance on Social Media The significant online hype surrounding the party did not translate into votes in rural areas. The reach of influencers was limited, and the initial enthusiasm from the youth eventually waned.
