The results of the two-phase voting for Bihar’s 18th Assembly have been announced, with the ruling NDA emerging victorious, securing 202 seats. The current assembly’s term is set to end on November 22, and the new 18th Assembly will be formed on or before that date.
In a significant shift from the 2020 elections, where the NDA had narrowly formed the government, the alliance is now poised to secure a clear two-thirds majority. This victory contrasts sharply with the results of the 2010 assembly elections, in which the NDA also triumphed in a landslide.
Notable defeats in this election include former Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Choudhary, who lost from Siwan, and Uday Narayan Choudhary, who lost from Sikandra in Jamui district. Both were RJD candidates. BJP’s Mangal Pandey won in Siwan, while RJD’s Sabitri Devi defeated Government Minister Sumit Kumar Singh in Chakai, Jamui.
Other notable RJD losses included Lalit Kumar Yadav in Darbhanga Rural, former MP Ramkripal Yadav in Danapur, and Congress State President Rajesh Kumar in Kutumba, Aurangabad district. RJD President Lalu Prasad’s elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, also lost from the Mahua assembly constituency.
The NDA’s success was further solidified by JDU’s performance, which gained 41 seats, a significant improvement from its 2020 tally of 43 seats. The BJP also saw a gain of 15 seats. In contrast, the RJD lost 50 seats compared to the previous election.
With the NDA securing a commanding majority, the new government is expected to run without crisis for the next five years. The process for forming the new government is underway, with the Election Commission set to submit the list of newly elected legislators to Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.
Following this, a notification will be issued for the formation of the new assembly. In the interim, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will tender his resignation and request to remain in office until the new government is formed. The NDA government is expected to take office by next week, with preparations already underway at the Raj Bhavan.
