Is 1st January a bank holiday in India? If you are wondering if the banks are closed on January 1, 2026, in India, then well, it depends on the state you reside in within the country. On the first day of the New Year 2026, banks in Aizawl, Gangtok, Imphal, Kohima, Itanagar, Chennai, Kolkata, and Shillong will observe a holiday.
AT the same time, bank branches in the other part of the country will remain open as usual.
Meanwhile, Banks across India will be closed on several days in January 2026 for public and regional holidays.
According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar, these holidays are not uniform throughout the nation as they vary from state to state, meaning banks to remain closed in certain parts of the country, while in others, the bank branches will function normally on the same day.

January 02- New Year Celebration and Mannam Jayanthi- Banks to remain closed in Aizawl, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram.
January 03: Birthday of Hazrat Ali- Bank branches to observe holiday in Aizawl, Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Kanpur.
January 12: Birthday of Swami Vivekananda: Observed as National Youth Day, Banks to remain closed in Kanpur and Lucknow.

January 14: Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu- Banks in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Itanagar to observe holiday.
January 15: Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, Makara Sankranti- Bank branches to remain shut in Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada.
January 16: Thiruvalluvar Day- Banks will remain closed in Chennai only.
January 23: Birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Saraswati Puja or Basant Panchami, Vir Surendrasai Jayanti- Banks' operation will remain shut in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, and Chennai.
January 26: Republic Day- National Holiday
Online Banking To Remain Operational
As the banks will be observing holidays for multiple days in January 2026, online banking will be operational. During these days, customers will have the option to continue accessing services through mobile banking, net banking, UPI, and ATMs.
