Budget 2024: The whole of India is looking forward towards the upcoming budget 2024, especially with eyes on the education sector. In the last 10 years, the government has increased the budget by 64%. Meanwhile, ahead of budget, the sector is expecting some special announcements to fulfil the ambitious promise of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Let's have a look at how education policy has evolved in the Modi government.

Building Foundation (2014-2016)

In the last 10 years, the primary focus was addressing immediate needs like Teacher training programs, which addressed the acute problem of staff shortages. "CLICK" classroom and school evaluation programs were initiated to improve quality and access. skill development programs initiative including Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) clear the way for preparing the future workforce.

Modernisation (2015-2019)

Higher education got away with increased funding for research, setting up of new institutions and modernization of existing secondary schools. Later, the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) and "Study in India" schemes worked to attract foreign students. Setting up the National Testing Agency and free online courses from SWAYAM modernise the online excess and quality control.

National Education Policy

The National Education Policy initiated in 2020 has become a guideline for education reforms in the modern era. The policy opens the doors to replace the traditional system with a new and inclusive one.

Expectations from Budget 2024

Government should focus on bridging the digital divide and providing quality education to all. A concrete step is needed especially in rural areas. Focus on encouraging more individual participation in education, and should prioritize teacher training and development along with increased funding. Should come up with special funding for research.
