Union Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for the financial year 2025-26 on Saturday, February 1. This will be her eighth consecutive Budget and the first full Budget of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term. A day before the budget, the finance minister tabled the economic survey report in the parliament today.

Amid the economic survey report and euphoria around budget 2025, the stock market ended today's session with a massive gain. Both the top stock indices Nifty and Sensex have settled nearly 1% higher compared to the previous day's closing value. Meanwhile, stock investors and traders are wondering, if the stock market will remain open on Saturday i.e. on Budget day.

Stock markets are open on Budget Day

The Indian stock market is usually closed on Saturdays and Sundays. However, since February 1 is Budget Day, both the NSE and BSE have confirmed that their stock markets will remain open for normal trading hours from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm. The commodity derivatives section will be open for trading till 5 pm.

This is a rare occurrence as the last time the market was open on a Saturday on Budget Day was in 2015, when the Union Budget was presented on February 28. The markets were closed.

Budget to be presented on February 1

Historically, the Union Budget was presented on the last working day of February. For example, in 2017, the then Finance Minister Arun Jaitley shifted the date to February 1, which gave the government a few extra days to implement policies during the financial year. Since 2017, the Union Budget has been presented on this date every year.

Market participants are expected to closely monitor the budget announcements for any key policy changes, tax reforms and growth-oriented initiatives that could impact the economy and the stock market.
