Banking cyber security Update: The Indian banks may soon be able to use individual national calling numbers with incoming call capabilities. This move will enhance customer identification of official calls and reduce fraud, according to a report by The Economic Times.

Several outgoing-only numbers in the "1600xx" series are currently used by banks; these numbers do not accept incoming calls. Nonetheless, banks have suggested a system in which every bank is given a distinct national number that is still in the 1600xx range and allows for two-way calls.

According to The Economic Times, which cited government sources, each bank should have a national number. Additionally, allowing incoming calls to these numbers would improve customer security and experience.

According to reports, talks have been held with the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the industry is hopeful that a decision will be made soon.

Concerns about the use of these figures for debt recovery have also been voiced by banks. It's unclear if third-party agents would also need to use the 1600xx series because many banks outsource their recovery procedures.

Executives told The Economic Times that they are asking the RBI and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for clarification on this. Banks have also asked for more precise rules regarding the use of 1600xx numbers as well as exceptions for customers who have previously consented to be contacted.
