The Income Tax Department issued a final warning to taxpayers who had missed the July 31 deadline to file their Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2022-23. The deadline to file a belated or amended ITR is December 31.

In a post on social media, the department urged taxpayers to act immediately and provided a website link for the necessary information.

A taxpayer who has missed the July 31 deadline should file the ITR after paying a late fee of up to rs 5,000 before 31st December.

Late ITR

Late ITR is filled like normal ITR (how to file plated ITR) but here the section changes. A normal ITR is filed under section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, while a delayed ITR is filed under section 139(4).

 step to file late ITR 

- Visit Income Tax e-filing portal, https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/
- Log in using credentials
- You will see the e-file menu at the top, go to Income Tax Return and select File Income Tax Return option.
- Next, select the relevant assessment year. Choose filing method as online Then click on Continue.
- Tap on Start New Filing. If you have already filed and saved the draft, you can choose the above option.
- Next, you have to choose the ITR form and select ITR 1. Here you can see which type of taxpayer needs to fill out which ITR form. Proceed with ITR Form 1.
- you will have a list of documents needed. Click Let's Get Started to go further
- On the next page, mention why you are paying income tax.
- Now you need to check the pre-filled return details. check all the information attentively
-click on Proceed to Validation.
- Now you need to check the ITR. After e-verification, your ITR will be submitted.
