Maruti Suzuki India intends to use Indian Railways to ship 35% of the vehicles created in its facilities over the next 7-8 years, according to MD and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi. The proportion of vehicle dispatches via railways climbed to 21.5% in the 2023-24 fiscal year from 5% in 2014-15.

Through railways, the nation's top automaker's vehicle shipments climbed from 65,700 units in 2014-15 to 4,47,750 units in 2023-24.  With our manufacturing capacity nearly doubling from about 2 million units to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, we aim to boost the usage of railways in vehicle shipments to close to 35% over the next 7-8 years, Takeuchi stated.

So far, Maruti Suzuki has shipped more than 20 lakh units through Indian Railways. The automaker transports vehicles to 20 locations, serving over 450 cities using Indian railways.
According to Takeuchi, the firm pioneered the usage of railways for vehicle shipments over a decade ago when it became the first company in India to receive the Automobile-Freight-Train-Operator license. Since then, the company has systematically boosted its share of vehicle shipments using railways, he added.

"With our production capacity nearly doubling from about 2 million units to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, we plan to augment the use of railways in vehicle dispatches, close to 35 percent over the next 7-8 years," Takeuchi stated.

The company is dedicated to the nation's net-zero emissions objective by 2070, he added. Earlier this year, under the PM Gati Shakti initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the nation's initial automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat facility.

This facility can ship 3 lakh vehicles each year. The automaker stated that the following in-plant railway siding is being built at the company's Manesar facility and will be operational soon.
