New ITR Forms Update: The government of India has confirmed that new simplified ITR forms are in progress, and has provided a timeline for notifying the forms under the recently revised Income Tax Act 2025. The government informed the Lok Sabha about the making of new forms in response to an unstarred question regarding the rollout time and features of the new ITR framework.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary on Monday confirmed that the new income tax returns (ITR) form will be issued before the financial year 2027-28.

In a reply to a Lok Sabha question, Chaudhary wrote, “Committee formulated by the CBDT on simplification of Income Tax Returns is carrying out extensive consultations with tax experts, institutional bodies, and field formations of the Income Tax Department."

The new Income Tax Act, cleared in the House on August 21, 2025, will officially come into effect from April 2026, replacing the 6-decade-old 1961 Income Tax Act and its regulations.

The new ITR forms, incorporating all the revisions proposed in the budget 2026, will be made available to taxpayers before they file their Income Tax Return in the Financial Year 2027-28.

CBDT Forms Committee To Ease Return Filing

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has formed a committee to facilitate return filing to ensure ease of compliance. The committee is keeping extensive consultations with tax experts, professional bodies and departmental field officials. Suggestions provided by the above-mentioned stakeholders will be embedded in the final ITR forms.

Will The ITR Forms 2026 Be Changed

The ITR forms for the Financial year 2026-27 will include all the revisions announced in the 2026 Budget by the government. But these forms will be notified to all taxpayers before the financial year 2027-28.

Taxpayers can continue to file returns for the ongoing financial year with the same forms as issued under the 1961 Income Tax Act.
