Two years after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) demonetised the currency, high-value Rs 2,000 notes worth Rs 6,266 crore remain in circulation, according to official data. 2,000 notes are legally valid. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced that it will withdraw the Rs 2,000 note on May 19,

The total value of the company declined from Rs 3.56 lakh crore at the close of business on May 19, 2023 to Rs 6,266 crore at the close of business on April 30, 2025, the RBI said in a statement on Friday.

"Thus, 98.24 per cent of the Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, have since been returned," the central bank said.

The facility to deposit and/or exchange such notes is available at all branches of the bank till October 7, 2023. However, this facility is still available at 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank.

From October 9, 2023, RBI-issued offices are also accepting Rs. 2,000 notes from individuals and institutions for deposit in their bank accounts. In addition, people can send Rs. 2,000 notes through India Post from any post office in the country to any office issued by the RBI for crediting their bank accounts.
