The benchmark Sensex surpassed the historic level of 79,000 points, while the Nifty hit a record high of 24,000 points for the first time on Thursday, as buying in blue-chip stocks like Infosys, Reliance, and TCS helped the market extend its gains for the fourth consecutive day and close at all-time highs. The 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 568.93 points or 0.72 percent to settle at a new closing high of 79,243.18. During the day, the index rose 721.78 points, or 0.91 percent, to reach a new high of 79,396.03 points.
The Nifty index finished at a new record high of 24,044.50, up 175.70 points or 0.74 percent. During the day, it rose 218.65 points, or 0.91 percent, to reach an all-time high of 24,087.45. Among the 30 companies on the Sensex, UltraTech Cement jumped more than 5% after the country's leading cement manufacturer said it would acquire a 23% stake in Chennai-based rival India Cements Ltd in a deal valued at around Rs. 1,885 crore. Infosys, TCS, and Reliance Industries' gains propelled the benchmark indices to new highs.

JSW Steel, NTPC, Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel, Power Grid, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and Tech Mahindra were also among the major gainers. Larsen & Toubro, Sun Pharma, Nestle, HDFC Bank, and Maruti were among the laggards. Analysts said most sectors recorded gains, with information technology and energy among the biggest gainers. Broader indices showed mixed results, with the mid-cap index closing in the green while the small-cap index lost more than half a percent.
In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong settled lower. European markets were mixed. US markets closed in positive territory on Wednesday. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 3,535.43 crore on Wednesday. Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose 0.84 percent to $85.97 a barrel. The Bahrain Stock Exchange index rose 620.73 points, or 0.80 percent, to settle at a new closing high of 78,674.25 on Wednesday. The Nifty index climbed 147.50 points or 0.62 percent to settle at a record closing high of 23,868.80.
