Stock Market Today| Sensex, Nifty Live Update: The domestic equity indices--Sensex and Nifty--had a highly volatile session on Monday as they closed sharply lower due to the escalating war in the Middle East. The market was dragged amid panic selling, uptick in crude prices and weak global cues.

Meanwhile, as the war between the US-Iran and Israel has worsened, and the crude prices continue to rise, the stock market is expected to remain volatile in the March 4 session as well.

"Indian equity markets are likely to remain under sustained selling pressure as global risk appetite deteriorates following the widening Israel–U.S.–Iran conflict across the Middle East. Disruptions to trade flows through the Strait of Hormuz, driven by heightened security risks and rising insurance restrictions, have triggered a sharp surge in crude oil prices, amplifying inflation and supply concerns," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

"For India, one of the world’s largest oil importers, elevated energy prices pose a dual risk—widening the current account deficit and intensifying imported inflation pressures," Ponmudi added.

Here is the live update of Sensex and Nifty50 today..

Stock Market Today: Rupee Trades Sharply Lower

The rupee weakened sharply by about 0.55% to trade near 92.10, as escalating geopolitical tensions in Western Asia and increasing U.S. involvement pushed crude oil prices higher.

"With India being a major importer of crude from the Gulf region, the sharp rise in oil prices — which jumped nearly 10% to the $76–$78 range — has pressured the rupee by increasing the country’s import bill and widening trade deficit concerns," said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst - Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities.

"The currency had earlier shown some stability following the Union Budget and the recent US–India trade deal, but the renewed spike in crude prices has reversed part of those gains. If geopolitical tensions persist and oil prices remain elevated, pressure on the rupee could continue in the near term," Trivedi added.

Stock Market Update Today: Market Settles Lower Amid Broad-Based Selling

According to an expert, Indian equity markets witnessed a sharp and broad-based decline today as the dramatic escalation of “Operation Epic Fury” involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran unsettled global investor confidence.

"The heightened geopolitical tension triggered a strong risk-off sentiment across financial markets, with India VIX surging 22.6%, reflecting a sudden spike in volatility and uncertainty. Investors rushed toward safe-haven assets, driving gold and silver higher by more than 1% and 3%, respectively, as market participants sought protection against systemic global risks," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money

"Sentiment was further pressured by a historic sell-off across Asian markets. South Korea’s KOSPI plunged nearly 12%, triggering circuit breakers, while Thailand’s SET index declined over 8%, highlighting the intensity of the global risk aversion," Ponmudi added further.

Share Market Today: Market Poised To Trade Sharply Lower: Experts

Experts said that with the war escalating and crude oil rising, markets are going into a period of heightened uncertainty. Nobody knows how long this conflict will go on and what will be the extent of havoc it could wreck.

"From the perspective of India, which relies on imports for around 85% of her oil requirements, the real concern is the potential inflation and its consequences on economic growth.  From the market perspective,  the impact of potentially widening trade deficit, depreciating currency, higher inflation and perhaps lower growth is the real issue. If this fear materialises, corporate earnings will be impacted. This is the fear in the market. This fear will materialise only if the war lingers for long. If it ends in, say 3 to 4 weeks, things will be back to normal," said  Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

Hariprasad K, SEBI-registered Research Analyst and Founder, Livelong Wealth said Nifty is poised for a sharply negative opening, with GIFT Nifty extending its bearish trend amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

"Major global indices have turned decisively weak, reflecting a broad risk-off shift as conflict concerns deepen and crude oil prices spike," he added.
