Stock Market Today LIVE Updates, Budget 2026: The domestic stock exchanges--NSE and BSE-- hold a rare special session today, i.e., Sunday, February 1, as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the Union Budget for FY26-27 in the Parliament. Historically, equity indices — Sensex and Nifty —have traded volatily on budget day due to optimism and caution around policy announcements.

"Markets are likely to remain highly volatile, with sharp moves possible in either direction depending on key announcements around fiscal policy, capex push, sector-specific incentives, and the fiscal deficit target (expected around 4.3–4.4% of GDP for FY27)," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

The special session will be a full-hour event (9:15 AM to 3:30 PM). Additionally, MCX, the commodity trading platform, is also holding a special session.

Here are the live updates of Sensex, Nifty, and other domestic indices....

Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Drag On STT Announcement

Indian equity markets witnessed sharp, event-driven volatility during the special Budget Day session, with benchmark indices slipping into a risk-off mode as investors digested the Union Budget 2026–27.

"Initial optimism faded quickly as higher transaction costs driven by the increase in Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on equity derivatives, and the lack of strong measures to revive foreign capital inflows, weighed on sentiment and near-term liquidity expectations. Selling pressure intensified across metals, PSU banks, and index heavyweights, while defensives such as healthcare and IT showed relative resilience," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

"A softer rupee and muted FII participation further reinforced cautious positioning. While the Budget reaffirmed long-term intent through record infrastructure spending and a manufacturing push, the market response signalled near-term disappointment, with participants choosing to book profits and reassess risk amid fiscal and policy clarity gaps," he added.

Stock Market Today: STT Revision To Hit F&O Traders, Gold To Remain Volatile: Expert

The Union Budget FY27 kept markets on edge as the fiscal deficit target was pegged at 4.3 per cent, while STT on futures was raised to 0.05 per cent and on options to 0.15 per cent, a move that is likely to dent participation in F&O, according to experts. ,

"There was no update on import duty for bullion, and with sharp weakness already seen in CME on Friday, domestic gold and silver reacted negatively. Gold has corrected nearly 20% from its peak of Rs 1,82,500 to around Rs 1,47,800, while silver has seen a much sharper 36% decline from Rs 4,20,000 to near Rs 2,65,650," said  Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst - Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities.

"Going ahead, gold is expected to remain volatile but relatively more stable compared to silver, which may continue to witness exaggerated swings. In the current phase, caution is advisable — a watch-and-learn approach is better until volatility subsides and price structures stabilize,"  Trivedi added.

Stock Market Today Live Update: Defence May Get Higher Allocation, Announcement For PSU Banks Merger Likely

As Investors are not expecting any major announcement in tax reliefs from the Budget 2026, since the 2025 Budget delivered huge income tax reliefs.

"Some tweaking of certain taxes is likely. If there is an increase in the exemption for long-term capital gains tax from Rs 1.25 lakhs presently to a higher limit, that would be a positive. From the market perspective, a fiscally prudent, growth-oriented Budget is desirable. There are rumours of exemption from long-term capital gains tax for certain categories of FIIs. If this happens, it can trigger a rally in the market," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

    Defence May Get Higher Allocation

According to experts, higher allocation for defence is a given; therefore, defence stocks will continue to be in focus.

Additionally, according to Vijaykumar, a thrust area of the Budget can be exports, particularly manufacturing exports, which the Economic Survey harps on. Therefore, export segments are likely to be on the radar of investors.

Announcements relating to PSU bank mergers and disinvestment in PSUs will be keenly watched.

Stock Market Today Live Update: FPIs Sell Equity Worth Rs 38,740 Crore In January

The FPIs have been sellers in January, with the total fund exodus through exchanges touching Rs 38740 crores. However, the intensity of selling sharply declined in the last few days of the month.

"FIIs will be looking for indications from the Budget before deciding on their strategy, going forward," said Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

"The Economic Survey presented a rosy picture of the economy with GDP growth of 7.4 per cent in FY26 and between 6.8 per cent and 7.2 per cent in FY 27. With inflation projected at 3.5 per cent for FY27, the nominal GDP growth can touch 10 per cent. This augurs well for corporate earnings in FY 27. If the 2026 Budget turns out to be fiscally prudent and growth-oriented, the market will turn resilient. The sharp correction in gold and silver, if it persists, can draw investors away from precious metals to equity," Vijaykumar added.

Stock Market Today Live Update: Sensex, Nifty Traded Relatively Lower Last Week

The domestic equity indices--Sensex, Nifty50--have declined for most of the trading session this week as investors turned cautious ahead of the budget and the exodus of foreign institutional investors (FIIs).

"Pre-Budget caution continues amid persistent FII outflows, a weak rupee hovering near 92/USD, and mixed global cues. However, steady DII buying and the market’s ability to hold key support levels are offering some downside cushion. A favourable Budget reaction could trigger an upside breakout, while any disappointment or profit-booking may pull indices back towards lower support zones. Until there is clarity from the Budget, the overall bias remains cautious to neutral," an expert said.
