Stock Market Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty Settle Slightly Lower; IT Stock Surge Amid Volatile Trade

The indices remained volatile due to profit booking pressure, global geopolitical concerns and value buying in IT heavyweights. 

Among Sectoral Indices, Nifty Bank, Nifty Fin Services, Nifty Auto and Nifty FMCG settled lower, while Nifty IT soared 711 points or 1.87 per cent. The broader market experienced mixed reactions with Nifty Next 50, Nifty 100 dragged, while Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 inched higher. 

"The Nifty 50 traded lower during the session, extending profit-booking pressure and touching an intraday low of 26,068. However, the index recovered from lower levels to close above the 26,100 mark, indicating the presence of underlying buying interest. The 26,050 zone continues to serve as immediate support, while the psychologically important 26,000 level has emerged as a strong demand area, helping preserve the broader bullish structure," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.

"Key moving averages remain intact, signalling that the primary trend continues to be supportive. Momentum indicators are neutral, with the RSI hovering around 54, pointing to short-term indecision rather than a trend reversal. A sustained move above 26,300 would be required to reinvigorate upside momentum toward the 26,500 level, while a decisive break below 26,000 could trigger a short-term corrective phase toward the 25,900–25,800 zone," Ponmudi added.   

- Stock Market Today Update: The domestic equity indices ended the highly volatile session slightly lower amid selling in metal, oil, and auto stocks, while value buying in IT shares.

Sensex ended the session at 84,961.14, down 102.20 or 0.12 per cent, while Nifty 50 settled at 26,140.75, down 37 points or 0.14 per cent.

Jubilant Foodworks reported a 13 per cent jump in its Q3 revenue year-on-year (YoY). The company's consolidated revenue from operations jumped 13.4 per cent to Rs 2,438.7 crore for the quarter under review.

Meanwhile, its shares traded lower post the development. The stock fell nearly 2 per cent during the intraday to touch an intraday low of Rs 535.55.

The shares of metal heavyweights Hindustan Zinc fell nearly 2 per cent during the intraday trade on Wednesday after silver prices tumbled in the domestic futures market.

Hindustan Zinc shares fell to Rs 632.60 apiece during the session.

Silver futures for March delivery on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) in India fell by about 3 per cent to 251,729 Indian rupees per kilogram.

Silver exchange-traded funds (ETFs) also declined, reflecting the drop in the price of the precious and industrial metal during the day.

The Equity indices slipped nearly 0.4 per cent amid a decline in key stocks. The Sensex was at 84,749.76, down 313.58 points or 0.37 per cent. 

The key equity indices dragged near the day's low in the afternoon session amid selling in heavyweights including Maruti Suzuki, HDFC Bank, Indigo, Power Grid, Kotak Bank, Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever, Mahindra and Mahindra, and NTPC. The Sensex was trading at 84,757.04, down 306.30 points, and the Nifty 50 was at 26,084.70, down 94 points. 

Meanwhile, blue-chip stocks including TCS, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, and Titan were trading in green.   

The Shares of Tata Group's jewellery and watch maker soared over 4 per cent to touch the intraday and fresh 52-week high of Rs 4,292.75 after the company posted a strong growth in Q3 FY26.

Tata Group company reported a stunning 40 per cent annual growth in its standalone revenue for the October-December quarter of the current financial year. The surge in the company's revenue was driven by the gold price rally.

After the companies posted a strong earnings report for the October-December quarter, Jems and Jewellery shares, including Senco Gold and Kalyan Jewellers India, soared in the intraday trading on January 7.

Senco Gold shares rallied 14 per cent to Rs 368.4 apiece after the company reported a 51 per cent year-on-year (YoY) growth in the third quarter of the current financial year. While Kalyan Jewellers India's share price soared 7 per cent to Rs 535 apiece after it reported a 42 per cent YoY jump in its consolidated revenue for Q3 FY26.

According to several media reports, the union government is likely to make its final decision on the budget presentation date for fiscal year 2027 during the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, scheduled for January 7.

The report indicated that the government is leaning toward maintaining February 1 as the budget presentation date, which, if approved, would mark the first time the fiscal year budget has been presented on a Sunday. However, the final decision on the budget date has not yet been announced.

After experiencing a bullish run for the past three days, post the US's unprecedented operation in Venezuela to capture the country's president, Nicolas Maduro, the prices of gold and silver declined in the early trade on Wednesday in the domestic futures market. The MCX Gold (Feb 5 Expiry) was trading at Rs 1,38,427 per 10 grams, down 0.47 per cent, and MCX Silver (March 5 Expiry) was down 1.53 per cent to Rs 2,54,841 per kilogram. 

The jump in heavyweights like TCS, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree, and Wipro led a rally in the Nifty IT Index as it was trading nearly a per cent higher in the early trade. 

The domestic equity indices started the session in the red, continuing the previous session's losing momentum. The BSE's 30-share index Sensex was down 155.25 points or 0.18 percent at 84,908.09, while the Nifty was trading 61.00 points or 0.23 percent lower at 26,117.70. 

According to the exchange filing, the company's same-store-sales growth is about 27 percent, and International operations revenue growth is nearly 36 percent year-on-year. 

The domestic equity indices could start today's session in the red as the Gifty Nifty suggests a weak start.
