Stock Market Today: The domestic stock benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, extended the previous day's decline as they opened in negative territory on Tuesday amid weak global cues and FIIs selling. Nor did the indices start trading in red, they plunged up to 0.5% in just 20 minutes of opening. At around 9:39 am, the BSE Sensex was trading at 72,881.44, falling 204.50, while Nifty50 nosdived 72.65 points or 0.33 percent against the previous day's closing price.
The NSE index-Nifty50- opened at 21,974.45, around 140 points lower as compared to the last session's closing value of 22,119.30. While the index of top 30 stocks on BSE- Sensex started trade at 72,2343.43, falling over 300 points against the previous day's closing value 73,085.94. Meanwhile, both the indices hit intraday low at 21,964.60, 72,633.54 respectively.
Stock market across the world fell sharply after US President Donald Trump made it clear that tariffs on Mexico and Canada would be implemented as planned. The comment gave fuel to fears of a trade war in North America and sent financial markets into turmoil. U.S. stocks fell sharply in afternoon trade.
Meanwhile, according to market data, FIIs/FPIs sold shares worth Rs 14,634.62 crore in the Indian stock market. However, they infused Rs 9,846.33 crore in the domestic market as well.
Top Losers: Nestle India, Tech Mahindra, Titan, Bharti Airtel, HCL Technologies, Asian Paints, Infosys, NTPC, Bajaj Finserv and Sun Pharmaceuticals were trading in red in early trade from Sensex stocks.
Top Gainers: Banking stocks like State Bank of India, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank were in green. Zomato, Power Grid, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Adani Ports were also among the gainers.
Global Market
Following the heavy debacle in the American stock market, Tokyo and Hong Kong were trading lower among Asian markets, while Shanghai and Seoul were doing business flat. Global oil benchmark Brent crude plunged 0.63 per cent to USD 71.17 a barrel.
