Stock Market Today: The domestic equity indices--Sensex and Nifty-- continued the previous session's gaining momentum on Thursday, February 26, amid sustained buying in IT stocks and inflows from DIIs and FIIs. However, despite the buying from domestic and foreign institutions, the market seems to be range-bound.
BSE Sensex opened with a decent gap up at 82,418.78 against last session's closing of 82,276.07. In the early trade, the 30-share index extended the momentum further to touch a high at 82,579.16. NSE Nifty50 started the session at 25,556.30, up compared to last day's closing of 25,482.50.
At the time of writing, Nifty was trading at 25,498.35, up 15.85 points or 0.06 per cent, while Sensex was doing business at 82,324.98, up 48.91 points or 0.06 per cent.
Top Losers and Gainers
Tech Mahindra, Infosys, TCS, HCL Tech, L&T, Maruti Suzuki, and BEL were trading higher. On the other hand, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Indigo, Tata Steel, and Eternal were the biggest laggards from the Sensex basket.
"A significant takeaway from the current market trend is that despite large institutional buying - FII and DII combined - the market is not surging. Yesterday, the combined institutional buying in the cash market was a massive Rs 8100 crores. Yet the market couldn’t sustain the early gains since the “sell on rally” trend emerged, wiping out the early gains," said Dr VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.
"As the market rallies and valuations get stretched, bears are getting stronger, and shorts are increasing, pulling the market down. This trend may continue in the near-term, capping the upside to the market," Vikaykumar added.
Sectoral and Broader Indices
Nifty Bank, Nifty Financial Services, and Nifty Auto traded range-bound in the early session, dragging the market sentiment a bit. Nifty IT surged over 1 per cent, lifting the market sentiment alone. Nifty FMCG traded lower.
Broader market mirrors the trend as well, Nifty Smallcap 100 were trading 0.20 per cent higher, Nifty Midcap 100 was up 0.5 per cent, and Nifty 100 was doing business 0.30 per cent higher
"It appears that the IT stocks are stabilising after the 20% crash in the last month, despite the uncertainty surrounding the sector," Vijaykumar added.
