Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday (February 1) presented the Union Budget 2025. Soon after the Budget was presented in Parliament, Sitharaman stated that the Centre had increased the disposable income of citizens by making adjustments to Income Tax rates.
The Finance Minister began her speech in the Parliament saying that the middle-class and infrastructure growth is the top priority. She also added that the focus of this budget is on youth, poor, women, and farmers. She announced that the limit of Kisan Credit Card limit will be exceeded from 3 lakhs to 5 lakhs.
In a dramatic turn of events, chaos erupted in the Parliament as Sitharaman began her speech. The Opposition MPs walked out of the Lok Sabha demanding a discussion of Mahakumbh Stampede that left 30 devotees dead and several injured. However, Sitharaman continued with the announcements.
Nirmala Sitharaman also announced that the new income tax bill will be tabled in the Lok Sabha next week. For the medical sector, Nirmala Sitharaman announced that 36 live-saving medicines, including medicines for cancer, to be exempted from customs duty. In a major relief to the taxpayers, Sitharaman announced no tax for people earning up to Rs 12 lakh.

No Income Tax payable up to an income of Rs 12 Lakh. Slabs and rates being changed across the board to benefit all tax-payers," announced FM Nirmala Sitharaman.
"...I propose to revise tax rate structures as follows: 0 to Rs 4 Lakhs - nil, Rs 4 Lakhs to Rs 8 Lakhs - 5%, Rs 8 Lakhs to Rs 12 Lakhs - 10%, Rs 12 Lakhs to Rs 16 Lakhs - 15%, Rs 16 Lakhs to Rs 20 Lakhs - 20%, Rs 20 Lakhs to Rs 24 Lakhs - 25% and above Rs 24 Lakhs - 30%. To taxpayers up to Rs 12 Lakhs of normal income other than special rate income such as capital gains, tax rebate is being provided in addition to the benefit due to slab rate reduction in such a manner that there is no tax payable by them," she said.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, "Inspired by the success, a modified UDAN scheme will be launched to enhance regional connectivity to 120 new destinations and carry 4 crore additional passengers in the next 10 years. The scheme will also support helipads and smaller airports in hilly, aspirational and northeast regional districts. Greenfield airports will be facilitated in Bihar to meet the future needs of the state. These will be in addition to the expansion of the capacity of Patna airport and Brownfield airport in Bihta.
