Former England batter Jonathan Trott's role as head coach for the Afghanistan men's cricket team has been extended for another year following a successful 18-month stint. Trott, who initially took on the coaching role in July 2022, has played a crucial part in Afghanistan's recent achievements on the field, prompting the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) to retain him for the 2024 season.
Afghanistan's noteworthy performance in the ODI World Cup marked a turning point in their cricketing journey. The team secured victories against formidable opponents such as Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, and Netherlands. Despite falling short against eventual champions Australia, where Glenn Maxwell played a remarkable inning, Afghanistan showcased significant improvement from their previous World Cup outings.

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Trott expressed his satisfaction with the team's progress, stating, "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with them so far. It'll be nice to be able to build on the success we had at this World Cup." Under Trott's guidance, Afghanistan's World Cup win count increased from one to five, signifying a positive trajectory for the team.
Since Trott's appointment, Afghanistan has seen success in both ODIs and T20Is, winning eight out of 23 ODIs, including a historic series win over Bangladesh, and 11 out of 26 T20Is, including a significant series win against Pakistan.
Currently engaged in a three-match T20I series against the UAE, Afghanistan's performance is at 1-1. The team is gearing up for a three-match T20I series against India in January as part of their preparation for the T20 World Cup scheduled for West Indies and the USA in June.
Jonathan Trott, renowned for his prolific career with England, particularly in Test cricket, where he played a pivotal role in the Ashes triumph in 2010-11, brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role. His success as a player, capable of constructing massive innings, has translated well into his coaching responsibilities.
