Sri Lankan spin all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has announced his retirement from Test cricket on Tuesday. Notably, Hasaranga has taken this decision in an effort to prolong his career in the limited overs format.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said it has accepted the decision of the 26-year-old Hasaranga.

“We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball programme going forward,” said SLC CEO Ashley De Silva.

While his Test appearances were limited to four matches, where he showcased his leg-spin skills, he managed to secure only four wickets. His final Test appearance took place against Bangladesh in Pallekele in 2021.

However, Hasaranga's prowess truly shone in white ball formats, where he emerged as a vital asset for Sri Lanka. Demonstrating his mastery as a spin spearhead and contributing as a lower-order batsman, he established himself as a key player.

In the One Day Internationals (ODIs) arena, Hasaranga's performance stood out. Over the course of 48 matches, he clinched an impressive 67 wickets and displayed his batting abilities by amassing 832 runs, inclusive of four half-centuries.

Within the realm of Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), Hasaranga's success continued. Garnering attention with his skills, he participated in 58 matches, securing an impressive 91 wickets and accumulating 533 runs, featuring a notable fifty.

His reputation extended beyond international cricket, as Hasaranga's prowess attracted interest from various T20 leagues across the globe. His role as a spinner and lower-order batsman remains integral to his contributions for Sri Lanka and various teams worldwide.
