Legendary Indian cricketer Aunshuman Gaekwad passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71 after a long battle with cancer. Gaekwad had traveled to London for treatment and returned to Baroda a month ago to continue his care.

The BCCI gave Rs 1 crore for Gaekwad's treatment and members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team also did their bid to help the cricketer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took to his official X account, expressed condolences on his demise.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, too, shared his condolences through X.

Gaekwad, who represented India in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs from 1975 to 1987, was known for his resilience and dedication on the field. He scored a total of 1985 runs in Tests, with his highest score of 201 coming against Pakistan.

In October 1997, Gaekwad was appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, a position he held until September 1999. During his tenure, one of the most memorable moments in cricket history occurred when Anil Kumble took all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.
