Ashes 2025-26: The England Cricket Board banned players with central contracts who played in the 2025-26 Ashes from participating in media interviews following England’s 4-1 series loss in Australia. According to an I Paper report, English County teams were told not to arrange pre-match interviews, as the board sought to control the narrative during this period.
“They are our players, so they’ll speak when on England duty," an ECB source had told the paper.
The report indicated that the ban was designed to prevent players from speaking in detail about the Ashes series loss. The Ben Stokes-led side not only lost 4-1 but was also involved in multiple off-field controversies, including drinking during the series and vice-captain Harry Brook's altercation with a bouncer before the series.
Subsequently, Sky Sports reported that the ECB lifted the temporary restrictions and allowed English players to attend press conferences and media events without any limitations.
The report also stated that the short-term ban was intended to give senior administrators, such as director of cricket Rob Key, an opportunity to address the media regarding the Ben Stokes-led team's performance. During this period, centrally contracted players were told not to discuss anything related to England cricket, particularly the recent Ashes series.
The board also wanted to avoid situations in which players might be asked about their coaches or internal matters during the series review. Temporarily restricting access to players was intended to help the board manage initial communications, according to the report.

The ECB conducted a formal review of the series to analyze team performance and future needs. Rob Key and head coach Brendon McCullum retained their positions after the team, now led by Harry Brook, reached the semifinals of a recent major event.
