During the Asia Cup 2023 clash between India and Sri Lanka, Shoaib Akhtar found himself at the centre of controversy following allegations of foul play by team India. Rohit Sharma-led India secured a spot in the final of the prestigious tournament by beating the Sri Lankan side by 41 runs, but the performance raised the eyebrows of many cricket fans across the world.
Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage wreaked havoc in the first innings, claiming an impressive five-wicket haul that saw India being bowled out for just 213 runs. This unexpected turn of events led to an outpouring of messages from fans, some claiming that "India had fixed the game" and was intentionally trying to lose, presumably to eliminate Pakistan from the competition.
Akhtar, known for his unfiltered opinions, didn't hold back as he addressed these allegations in a video posted on his YouTube channel. He called out the accusers, labelling their claims as nonsensical.

Akhtar appreciated the hard work put forth by the Sri Lankan team, particularly young talents like Wellalage and Asalanka, who made the game interesting with their all-round performances.
"Why would they lose, tell me? They want to go through to the final," Akhtar passionately questioned the absurdity of the accusations. He praised India's Kuldeep Yadav for his pivotal four-wicket haul, which helped turn the match in India's favour.
“Great fightback India! Kuldeep was an asset again. He took four wickets, and look at Bumrah, look at the fightback while defending such a small total,” Akhtar said.
Akhtar criticised Pakistan's recent performance and questioned the fitness of key pacers like Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, and Shaheen Afridi. He emphasised the need for a fighting spirit in the Pakistan squad, as displayed by young Wellalage on the Sri Lankan side.
He said that Pakistan lack good middle-order batsmen and quality spinners. The veteran later advised Pakistan to maintain their optimism as they are still in the running for a position in the September 17 final.
As India solidified their place in the final, the pressure now lies on Pakistan and Sri Lanka, who will be playing against each other on September 14 in a virtual semi-final match.
