Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have set a new record by reaching the milestone of scoring 5000 runs together in the quickest time (86 innings) in the Asia Cup Super Four clash against Sri Lanka. They surpassed the West Indies duo of Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, who accomplished this feat in 97 innings.

Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist of Australia played 104 innings, while Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka played 105 innings to reach 5000 runs.

Individually, Virat and Rohit have reached many milestones, but this time they did it together. They became the eighth pair in the ODIs to score 5000 runs in partnership. Notably, Kohli and Rohit have the highest average of the 13 pairings who have combined for at least 4,000 runs in ODIs.

They are the third Indian pair to achieve this landmark, following Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly (8,227 runs), and also Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan (5,193 runs).

Virat and Rohit achieved the 5000-run mark in their 86th ODI partnership, having formed 18 century partnerships and 15 half-century stands, with an impressive average of 62.57. Their highest partnership came in 2018 against Australia when they stitched a remarkable 246-run stand in Guwahati, successfully chasing down a challenging target of 323.

Surprisingly, Rohit and Virat batted together for the first time in Asia Cup 2023 on Tuesday. They only managed 10 runs in the partnership, with Virat getting out cheaply on 3 runs.

Rohit has amassed over 10,000 runs in 241 innings he has played, with an average of 48.93 and a strike rate of 90.28. On the other hand, Virat has over 13,000 runs in 267 innings, with an average of 57.62 and a strike rate of 93.85.
