AUS W vs SA W: In a historic match at Manuka Oval, South Africa achieved a milestone result by securing their first-ever victory against Australia in women's internationals. The Proteas emerged triumphant with a six-wicket win in the second T20I.
The successful run chase was led by Tazmin Brits, who set the tone early with a brisk 41 runs from 28 balls. Captain Laura Wolvaardt (58 not out from 53) anchored the pursuit, guiding South Africa to victory with an over to spare.
The Proteas' bowlers, spearheaded by Masabata Klaas (2-16), had earlier restricted Australia to a below-par total of 142 despite Grace Harris' late contribution of 31 not out from 18 balls.
This historic win levels the multi-format series at two points each, setting the stage for a T20I series decider at Blundstone Arena on Tuesday night.
In 23 previous white-ball encounters between the two teams, South Africa had never come close to defeating the world's top-ranked team. The closest they had come was a tied ODI in Coffs Harbour in 2016.
Having faced an eight-wicket defeat the previous day, the Proteas displayed an improved performance across all facets of the game. Brits, who had a slow start a day earlier, showcased aggressive intent from the beginning, scoring eight boundaries in her innings.
Despite losing wickets in the middle overs, Wolvaardt's composed batting ensured South Africa stayed on course. The experienced pair of Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp had the Proteas cruising until the 15th over. Although a couple of quick wickets opened a slight opportunity for Australia, Wolvaardt's classic drive through the covers eased the pressure.
Earlier in the match, South Africa's bowlers delivered a superb performance, restricting Australia to 142. Alyssa Healy's aggressive start was curtailed by Klaas, who finished with figures of 2-16. Regular wickets fell for the hosts, but Grace's late cameo provided some crucial runs.
South Africa will be aiming to carry the momentum from this historic victory into the series decider.
