R Ashwin IPL Retirement: India's star spinner R Ashwin earlier this week announced his retirement from IPL by sharing a heartwarming note on his official social media account. During IPL 2025, he came back to the Chennai Super Kings after eight seasons but had a disappointing outing throughout. He played in nine matches and took seven wickets at a poor average of 40.42. Speculations were rife that he would be released from the Chennzai-based franchise, and that's when he announced his decision.
Ashwion reckoned during an interaction on his YouTube channel as to why he made this decision. He said that he doesn't have the energy anymore to commit himself to the two-month IPL schedule. He acknowledged the fact that with a lot of traveling, matches, and recovery did took a toll on his health.
“I was thinking if I can play IPL next year. Three months of IPL is a little too much for me. It’s draining. This is one of the reasons why I’m awe-struck by seeing someone like MS Dhoni. As you grow older, the bandwidth to play IPL becomes less," Ashwin was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.
He had written a very interesting line on his retirement post, which said, “My journey as an explorer of the game begins today." According to a few media reports, R Ashwin might be participating in the Hundred and SA20 next year. But Ashwin talked about playing in some other league, but never revealed anything much.
He made his IPL debut way back in 2009 and has played in 221 matches so far for five teams- Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Super Giants, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
After playing in 221 matches, he has taken 187 wickets and has scored 833 runs at an average of 13.01. He had become the seventh most capped player in this cash-rich league and had also led Punjab Kings from the front in 28 matches between 2018 and 2019, but they had won just 12 matches under his captaincy.
