Shanto smashed a six as the winning shot as he reached his fifty. Bangladesh have defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in this second T20I match.

They chased down the 166-run target in 18.1 overs with a match-winning partnership between Shanto and Hridoy of 87 runs for the third wicket.

Shanto remained unbeaten on 53 runs whereas Hridoy scored 32 runs off 25 balls.

The three-match series stands level at 1-1 with a match remaining.

Kusal and Kamindu Mendis have done well with the recovery so far after the early wicket. Both players look in great touch and have smashed multiple boundaries. Two back-to-back good overs for Sri Lanka and nine came off that 5th over bowled by Mahedi.

Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors, Upal Tharanga, reveals the reason behind picking a spin-heavy squad for the T20I series in Bangladesh.

“In T20s, we need a wicket-taking option, which is why we opted for Jeffrey [Vandersay] over someone like Dunith [Wellalage],” Tharanga said.

“We felt that Jeffrey was more of an attacking bowler in T20s. We had a big discussion regarding Vijayakanth Viyaskanth and Jeffrey, and there were differing opinions within the selection committee.

“But in the end, we went with Jeffrey because the [T20] World Cup is coming up soon and there was a question over whether Viyaskanth could suddenly be brought in to play in a World Cup. So that’s why we went with Jeffrey and his experience.”

Bangladesh have won the toss and opted to bowl in the second T20I in Sylhet.

Bangladesh will look to bounce back after losing the series opener by a close margin on Monday. The newly appointed three-format captain Najmul Hossain Shanto will try to keep the series alive for the final encounter.   

Sri Lanka posted a massive total of 206/3 in their 20 overs on the back of half-centuries from Sadeera Samarawickrama (61*) and Kusal Mendis (59) whereas Charith Asalanka scored unbeaten 44 runs in 21 balls.

They successfully defended the total and restricted Bangladesh to 203/8 with the help of two wickets each from Angelo Mathews, Binura Fernando, and Dasun Shanaka while Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana took a wicket each as well.

Sri Lanka will be aiming to clinch the series with a match to go, having won the first match by 3 runs. On the other hand, Bangladesh will be desperate for win to bounce back in the series and take the result to the final match.
