T20 World Cup 2026: The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to welcome Scotland as Bangladesh's replacement in the T20 World Cup 2026, after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) failed to meet the ICC's deadline.
According to Cricbuzz, BCB's hopes of a last-minute resolution were dashed as ICC's 24-hour ultimatum expired without a formal response.
Despite internal considerations between government officials and national players, BCB failed to complete the deadline, possibly paving the way for Scotland to take Bangladesh's spot in the T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh's refusal to travel to India for the T20 World Cup triggered the tournament's fallback plan, with the ICC now poised to formalise Scotland's inclusion as their replacement.
The world governing cricket body had given Bangladesh a 24-hour ultimatum to confirm its participation, but the side failed to respond to the International Cricket Council formally within the deadline.
Despite BCB president Aminul Islam's hopes for a last-minute miracle, the ICC's decision to replace Bangladesh appeared all but final. The BCB had all of Thursday to review its standpoint on travelling to India, but it held its position, citing security concerns.
Asif Nazrul said ICC guarantees weren't satisfactory due to Bangladesh's dependent status.
"Now this ICC tournament is being held in India. No matter how much the ICC says there is no security risk, the ICC does not have its own country. The country where my player was not safe - and where the Indian cricket board, which is an extended arm of the government, failed or was unwilling to provide him security under pressure from extremists - that is the country hosting this tournament," Bangladesh government's sports advisor Asif Nazrul said on Thursday.
