BCCI Issues Clarification On Ajit Agarkar's Contract Renewal Amid Speculations Ahead Of 2027 ODI World Cup

There has been a lot of talk about the future of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Ajit Agarkar, especially with the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup coming up.

Amid all the speculation, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla made it clear that decisions like these are not rushed and are taken by the board after careful thought.

“Such decisions rest with the BCCI management. These are collective calls taken at the appropriate time, keeping the larger interests of Indian cricket in mind. When the time comes, the board will take a considered view," Shukla was quoted as saying to TOI.

Will Agarkar remain BCCI selector?

For now, reports suggest that the BCCI has decided to continue with Agarkar, renewing his role as chairman of the senior selection committee for another year. The idea is to keep things stable as India prepares for the next ODI World Cup cycle.

Agarkar’s time in charge has been quite successful. After a setback in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Team India, which was selected under him, won all the ICC titles, including two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy.

“Agarkar didn’t seek extension. A selector can continue up to four years in either junior or senior selection committee and five years cumulatively across both committees. Hence, Ajit’s contract is being renewed and not extended," a senior BCCI source said as quoted by Network 18.

Agarkar's tough decisions as a selector

Apart from the results, his tenure has also been about making some tough calls. During this period, senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket, while the team also began moving on from experienced pacer Mohammed Shami. In another big decision, Shubman Gill was left out of a T20 World Cup squad, with the selectors choosing in-form Ishan Kishan instead.

People close to the matter say Agarkar preferred to focus on his work rather than pushing for an extension. Given his strong record and the need for consistency before a major tournament, the board’s decision shows trust in his leadership and a clear plan to keep the team-building process steady.
