BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has brushed aside rumours about Rohit Sharma's future in international cricket, saying there is "no question" of the India captain retiring from ODI cricket anytime soon.

There has been plenty of speculation in recent weeks that the ODI series against England could have been Rohit's final appearance in the format for India. Reports claimed that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir had informed him that he was not part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Rohit answered those doubts in style during the final ODI at Lord's. The 38-year-old played a brilliant knock of 138 from just 110 balls. Although India ended up losing the match, his innings reminded everyone why he remains one of the team's most important players.

Speaking to reporters, Shukla dismissed the retirement talk.

“Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and is continuing to play. The things being circulated in the media and on social media have no meaning. As of now, there is no question of his retirement," Shukla told reporters.

Shukla also expressed confidence in the current team management and selection panel. He said there was no reason to make unnecessary changes while the Indian team was performing well.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the decision on who stays in the team and who does not rests with the selectors. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at present," he said.

Before his century at Lord's, Rohit had struggled to score runs in the opening two matches of the England series, leading to fresh questions about his place in the side. His match-winning effort in the final ODI, however, once again showed the class and experience he brings to the team.

Shukla's statement carries weight because there were reports that Rohit was unhappy after being informed about his future. It was also claimed that he had approached BCCI officials to raise his concerns over the decision. While the selectors are responsible for picking the squad, the BCCI remains the final authority on matters related to Indian cricket.

However, India's upcoming ODI assignment will be a three-match series against West Indies, which will take place in September.
